Pulwama is known as the Medical City of Jammu and kashmir as it is home to countries largest health institute AIIMS(All India Institute Of Medical Sciences) located in Awantipora Tehsil of the district
The cement factories in Khrew contribute 1918 crores per annum to the state economy which is third contributor to the state economy after Tourism department and Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd. This is the lone town in Kashmir valley where you will have 24-Hour Electricity. The cement factories, mega stone crusher's, Saffron growing by the farmers and the business of saffron, almonds and walnuts are the main economic drivers of Khrew. The Cement has generated good employment in the area but at the same time due to air pollution caused by the dust coming out of chimney these factories, there has been considerable decline in production of wall nuts, almonds, saffron and other crops.
In March 2009 four more cement factories started in this area. The name of the cement industries are:-J&K Cements additional line of 600TPD, TCI, Dawar, Cemtac, Green Valley, H.K Cements and ICC.
Pulwama city is divided into 35 wards and due to its dense congestion city has been divided into Old town and New town.Most of the government offices are located at Old town and most educational institutes are located in New town.old town consists of chatapora,malikpora,prichoo,washbug,dalipora,dangerpora areas.New town areas include Drusso,boonura,machpuna,tengpuna,wagum,goodura,sirnoo,bandzoo,rangmulla,themna and gangoo transforming municipal committee pulwama into muncipal council pulwama. Awantipur Air Base

Places Of Interest
Shikargah in Tral area of Pulwama district is situated about 3 Kms from Tral town and is an attractive tourist spot. It is also an abode for wildlife. Virgin and undisturbed, Shikargah is located in the middle of a vast stretch of dense woods which was traditionally considered a favorite hunting place for the Royals. Maharaja Hari Singh (1925-1947) also used to visit the place for wild life hunting. Shikargaah was traditionally a favorite hunting place for the Royals. Shikargah is situated at the junction of the Wasturwan Mountain and Kherwon surrounded by forests and snow-clad peaks at an altitude of 2,130m. Shikargah resembles Gulmarg but has an added advantage as the night temperatures do not drop too low because of its location at much lower altitude than Gulmarg. The famous scenic spot of Shikargah here has become a major tourist attraction after the road leading to it was thrown open years ago.
IGC Lassiopra,IGC Khrew and Industrial Estate Chatapora holds the states largest industries.Various goods are manufactured here like Leather,Steel,Beverages,medicine,cold storages,Food parks. IGC Lassipora is the fastest growing industrial estate.The officers also inspected Bone Mill units and listened to the issues of the unitholders. Besides they also took stock of progress on the construction of Food Park at Lasssipora. General Manager J&K SIDCO, Superintending Engineer SIDCO, Project Manager DIC Pulwama and other concerned were also present on the occasion.
According to the 2011 census Pulwama district has a population of 560,440, roughly equal to the nation of Solomon Islands or the US state of Wyoming. This gives it a ranking of 78th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 598 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,550/sq mi) . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 29.18%. Pulwama has a sex ratio of 913 females for every 1000 males, lower than the national average of 940, and a literacy rate of 95%., slightly higher than the national average of 64.3%.
